Dr. Birhanu is a Neurosurgeon and an assistant professor in brain and spine surgeries. He is the first Neurosurgeon to start brain and spine surgeries at St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. He is currently working as a chief of brain and spine surgeon at Addis Ababa Burn, Emergency and Trauma Hospital (AaBET) since 2015.
He’s also the first Neurosurgeon in Ethiopia who started complex spine deformity correction surgeries at St Paul’s Hospital Millennium College. This service was started in collaboration with Coptic Church from Egypt, a group of American volunteers led by Dr Kamal Ibrahim- Spine deformity correction surgeon from Loyola University, Chicago, Illinois and Dr Rick Hodes- director of AJJDC (American Jews Joint Development Commission).
Dr. Birhanu worked as a Medical Director (Chief of hospital affairs and planning) at Addis Ababa Burn Emergency and Trauma (AABET) Hospital, from September 2015- May 2018. He also served as one of the Consultants, to establish Neurosurgery department and neurosurgery residency training program at St Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College. Besides, he has been volunteering as an attending neurosurgeon at one of the government institutions, Minelik II Hospital in Addis Ababa.
Dr. Birhanu have been working closely with Dr Tedros Adhanom, former minister, Minister of Health, current director of World Health Organization (WHO), as one of the three young Ethiopian doctors, to establish St Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College.
Dr Birhanu is born and grew in Jimma town, Oromia region, Southwest of Ethiopia. He graduated from Jimma comprehensive high-school with distinction in 2001. He received his medical doctorate (MD) degree in 2007 from Addis Ababa University, College of Health Sciences, School of Medicine, and worked as an emergency physician at St Paul’s Specialized Hospital. He also served his community as a resident at the Tikur Anbesa Hospital (Addis Ababa University). In 2008 he started pursuing his postgraduate study in neurosurgery at Addis Ababa University, College of Health Sciences, School of medicine, Ethiopia and Haukeland University Hospital, Bergen (Norway) concentrating on becoming a profound neurological and spine surgeon, graduating in 2014.
Dr. Birhanu published research in different international journals including, Associations of American Neurosurgery Journal and East African Journal of Surgery. As a part of the constantly evolving field of medicine, Dr Birhanu endeavors to keep himself up to date and advance his education in the Neurological Sciences as well as spinal surgery in Ethiopia, USA, Ghana, Egypt, China, India, and Turkey etc. He is also the main contributor of the medical book published named “quick medical references” He is also the Executive Director and Chief Medical Editor of the Siletenachin.com. He is the author of many articles on the website but also monitors the content of other contributors.
As a young neurosurgeon, Dr Birhanu’s mission is to make many contributions to the advancement of neurological surgeries in Ethiopia, Africa and the world. He continually updates himself with evidence based neurosurgical practices so that he can better take care of patients and also pass it onto his successors to have a more accurate view of the neuroscience. He commits his life helping patients, societies and advancing his colleagues’ level of understanding. Teaching and conducting research are the two most important actions that contribute to the advancement in neuroscience in Ethiopia.
Dr Birhanu is also the founder, writer and performer of Dr. Be Show. He is also pursuing his passion in providing the best patient care possible, educating the general public, his fellow doctors and healthcare professionals in different forms of media. Dr Birhanu mainly focuses on disease prevention, better customer service in healthcare and contributes greatly to the standardization of the nation’s healthcare system. In addition to a wide range of medical teachings in different mass media, he is now running his own private clinical practice and serving his community in Addis Ababa as a consultant neurosurgeon.
